Unpaid Internships and Why Companies Like Them

Posted on May 14, 2011

A recent article from the Daily Eastern News highlights the fact that companies are now more likely to hire unpaid interns because of the harsh economy and the fact that many of them have to fire paid employees.

While that may seem good for the student intern, it actually may not be as beneficial as it appears. More and more companies are treating interns as unpaid employees instead of students trying to learn the field.

If the government finds out that a company is violating the Fair Labor Standards Act guidelines for internships, it would be quite detrimental for everyone involved.

The article lists FLSA's guidelines and also urges students to be aware of their rights. If a company gets caught violating the guidelines, the student could lose the internship and the company could be sued.

Our Houston, Texas unpaid intern lawyers have seen this happen. We were therefore quite pleased to see that the Daily Eastern News was reaching out to students with this information.
