Our Houston, Texas overtime lawyers were interested to read a recent article in Bloomberg Businessweek that reported that a company based out of Goldthwaite, Texas is being sued after it was discovered that 31 mentally disabled workers fell victim to unfair wages while working in an Iowa turkey processing plant.
The company, Hill Country Farms, also did business as Henry's Turkey Service, and contracted the employees to work for Iowa's West Liberty Food, where they endured verbal and physical abuse for over 20 years, in addition to unfair wages and unpaid overtime.
The workers were only paid $65 per month, and were required to live in terrible living conditions at a bunkhouse that had no central heating and boarded windows. While on the job, the workers were subject to name-calling, kicking, and the punishment of having to carry heavy weights on their shift.
The lawsuit was filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in the U.S. District Court in Davenport, Iowa.
