Restaurant Pays $275,700 in Back Wages to Houston Workers, More Suits Filed

Posted on Dec 31, 2011

Three Houston restaurants were the subject of a recent article by the Houston Press, after it was reported that the wait staff and general manager at Ruggles restaurant walked out after repeated non-payment of tips and overtime wages.

The owner admitted that he owed the wait staff approximately $14,000 to $15,000, and said that the amount would be paid in full at the time of the article printing.

Also mentioned in the article was Taconmadre, a local chain that was required to pay back over $275,000 in back wages to 72 of its current and former employees after a U.S. Department of Labor investigation found them to be in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Houston’s Brasserie 19 was also sued by a former employee who claims to have not been paid fair wages for five months.

Often, Houston restaurant wage theft stems from employers taking an unfair tip credit out on the employee or forcing them to share their tips with hourly-paid employees.
