Another meeting was held on November 23 regarding the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). Accusations were made that they did not comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act when they failed to pay their workers fair overtime wages.
The DCF was found to be in violation of the Act from 2008 to 2010 after their Miami and northeast Florida employees were asked to work more than eight hours to complete work that they were incapable of finishing each day. They were required to work without the additional pay of one and a half times their normal hourly wage, as mandated by the FLSA.
This was not the first time that the DCF had refused to pay overtime or keep proper records. A previous U.S. Department of Labor investigation found that between 2004 and 2005, employees were forced to work off the clock at times, and the investigation resulted in the DCF having to pay more than $166,000 to 126 workers.
The article reported that an estimated $1.3 million is owed to workers by the state of Florida for unpaid wages and overtime.
