More than 4,600 current and former employees will be receiving $830,422 in back wages from Kinder Morgan Inc. and Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP after the companies violated the Fair Labor Standards Act.
The National Law Review reported that FLSA violations occurred at 11 of Kinder Morgan's locations; the complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, Houston Division. A pipeline transportation and energy storage company, Kinder Morgan has 470 facilities across the U.S. and more than 8,000 employees.
The U.S. Department of Labor investigation found that not only did Kinder Morgan fail to pay proper overtime compensation to some of their employees, they also did not pay for time spent at pre-shift meetings. Kinder Morgan was also accused of not including bonuses into the regular rate of pay when calculating overtime as well as rounding the number of hours employees worked in order to benefit the company.
