An average of $3,440 per worker will be handed out to gas station workers who were not paid fair wages, including minimum wages and overtime pay, according to the Star-Ledger.
The payments are a part of the more than $1 million that will go to 295 New Jersey gas station workers who were treated unfairly under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Numerous U.S. Department of Labor investigations found that there is only 25% compliance with the FLSA standards in the gas station industry, which sparked the northern New Jersey division of the U.S. Department of Labor to look into the 74 gas stations in its area and result in the $1 million back wage repayment.
The payment breakdown is as follows: $322,199 for 66 workers in Union County; $162,900 for 47 workers in Bergen County; $127,921 for 31 workers in Passaic County; $104,067 for 54 workers in Middlesex County; $80,738 for 22 workers in Morris County; and $48,442 for 26 workers in Essex County.
The article also goes on to state that many of the non-compliance issues are a direct result of poor record and bookkeeping on the employers’ parts.
