Vermont wage and hour laws

What is minimum wage?
Vermont minimum wage is $8.46 per hour.

What is the minimum wage for tipped employees?
Vermont applies a higher minimum wage for tipped employees than the federal law. Vermont tipped employees can be paid a lower rate of $4.10 per hour as long as the employee’s wages and tips add up to at least the state minimum wage of $8.46 an hour. If it does not, an employer must make up the difference in cash.

When am I eligible to earn overtime?
Vermont employees are generally eligible to federal Fair Labor Standards Act protections, which mandate that non-exempt employees must be paid overtime pay (at one-and-one-half times their regular pay rate) for every hour they work over 40 in a workweek.

Am I entitled to a lunch or rest break?
Vermont law requires that an employer provide reasonable opportunities to eat and use bathroom facilities. However, neither Vermont nor federal law specify a minimum break period. Federal law requires that if an employer chooses to provide a rest break or meal break, any breaks lasting less than 20 minutes must be paid, and any breaks 30 minutes or longer do not have to be paid.
