I work more than 40 hours every week in a grocery store, but I am barely paid minimum wage and I am never paid overtime. Is this legal?

A:

Supermarket employees are generally eligible for overtime pay under the wage and hour laws. Whether you work as a cashier, bagger, clerk or a produce department employee you are normally eligible to be paid minimum wage and overtime at one-and-one-half times your regular pay rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek.

Many employers take advantage of low wage workers and deny them overtime pay or even federal minimum wage. The Fair Labor Standards Act is a federal law that protects the wages of non-exempt employees nationwide.

Many employees are afraid to speak up for fear of what may happen. There are laws that protect workers agaisnt employer retalitation.
If you are unsure if you are paid correctly you should contact our wage lawyers today to get  a free case evaluation. You can also order our free book to learn how employees can fight back against unfair pay.
