Should you be paid for travel time at work?

Do employers have to reimburse employees for travel time to and from work sites? Learn how workers can recover back pay from employers for travel time.

A frequent question many employees ask is: "Does my employer have to pay me for travel time to and from my job site?"

The answer depends on the facts of your situation, but many times employees can be reimbursed for traveling to and from work sites and can file against their employer to recover the amount owed for travel time.

Case in Point

MARSHALL, Texas - Two former employees of Everlast Mechanical Services Inc. have brought a lawsuit against the employer claiming that the employees, who perform oilfield job duties and are paid hourly, are required to meet at company headquarters every day before driving to the actual work site.

According to the lawsuit, the employees claim that they complained to the company several times about not being compensated for travel time, but the company continued its practice of failing to pay for travel time.

Employees should be compensated for time spent traveling to various work sites according to the FLSA.

Unfortunately, employers continue to use their own pay practices even after repeated employee complaints. Most workers are never compensated for back pay owed to them under the law.
