Oil company Kinder Morgan in wage lawsuit

Texas energy company Kinder Morgan owes 4,000 workers overtime pay

Some of the biggest companies in the oil, natural gas and energy industry operate in Houston. Kinder Morgan Inc., owner of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP, employs 8,000 employees at 470 facilities in the United States and has locations in Texas. A labor investigation found that the company stiffed almost 5,000 employees out of overtime pay.

Several branches were under investigation for wage violations and a U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas ruled that 11 Kinder Morgan locations in Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, North Dakota and Texas violated overtime provisions of the FLSA.

Other violations included:

• Bonuses paid to employees were not included as part of the regular pay rate upon which overtime compensation should have been calculated,
• multiple locations failed to pay employees for pre-shift meetings,
• the company improperly rounded the employees' work hours.
