Six cents an hour may not seem like a big increase, but it will affect 200,000 minimum-wage workers in Florida.
The increase in minimum wage is to keep pace with a higher cost of living. Under Florida law, minimum wage will be increased every year to keep up with any cost of living increase in the past year.
Federal minimum wage laws
The federal minimum wage for nonexempt employees is $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009. The federal minimum wage laws are laid out in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Many states also have minimum wage laws. When an employee is subject to both the state and federal minimum wage laws, the employee is entitled to the higher of the two minimum wages.
Texas minimum wage laws
Texas follows the federal minimum wage rate, which is $7.25 per hour. By law, employers are required to pay employees the federal minimum wage if no state law exists.
