Employers use many different wage scams to rob their employees of their hard-earned wages. Sometimes, employers violate the federal labor laws by falsifying payroll records and requiring employees to pay back overtime compensation.
Case in Point
An animal hospital in Cincinnati has been found to have violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by falsifying workers' payroll records. The investigation revealed that the employers would pay workers their full wages, including overtime wages, but would require the employees to give back the overtime amount in cash. The animal handlers worked 60 to 70 hours a week.
The animal hospital is being petitioned by the court to pay over $85,000 in back wages and liquidated damages for 21 workers at its two locations for January 2008 through December 2010. This is the fourth time the company has been investigated for alleged violations of the FLSA. Penalties for willful violations of the FLSA are also being added for $23,100.
