The long arm of the wage and hour law has finally caught up to two brothers who made workers endure a laundry list of workplace violations for years. A Los Angeles court approved a $1 million settlement for about 400 workers who endured years of worker exploitations.
Car wash owners have dirty history
The two brothers, Benny and Nisan Pirian, are apparently no strangers to the legal system. In 2009, the Los Angeles city attorney filed a complaint against the brothers, stating that they used intimidation and threats of violence to discourage workers from reporting work and wage issues.
A year later, a court charged the brothers with 6 criminal counts and both were sentenced to a year in jail.
Lather, rinse, repeat: Wage abuse repeated at 4 car wash locations
In the lawsuit, workers claimed they sometimes put in 10-hour days, but were paid below minimum wage - a Fair Labor Standards Act violation. Some workers reported that they weren't paid a wage and only survived on tips.
Systematic FLSA violations common in low-wage industries.
